Advocacy

As with any global business, exchange rate volatility, economic and political upheaval in any single market impacts the industry worldwide.

In the Asia Pacific region our industry faces several specific challenges which threaten the future development of our business and over which we do have, or can attempt to have, some influence. At APTRA we are doing our utmost to work with retailers, suppliers and trade associations to address these issues through information, education and advocacy with the relevant regulatory authorities.

Over the past eleven years, APTRA has acted very much behind the scenes, working to safeguard the interests of the duty free and travel retail trade throughout the region. Recent months have seen constructive and intense behind the scenes work in collaboration with all industry stakeholders from all sectors, as well as sister duty free associations such as the Duty Free World Council (DFWC) and European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC). Engagements in countries such as India, Malaysia and Thailand where the industry has successfully managed to avoid the implementation of national laws on duty free and travel retail sector have also involved interaction with foreign trade delegations in the respective countries.

Currently the association’s advocacy work is centred around the representation of the industry’s position on a number of issues related to the liquor and tobacco categories, to ensure that the duty free and travel retail industry stakeholders are not impacted negatively by national legislation which does not take into account the unique status and retail conditions associated with the sector.
