One of APTRA’s key missions is to facilitate contact between members through seminars, conferences and an online database with the objective of driving the growth of the industry in the Asia Pacific region.
In recent years APTRA has invested in developing the Association’s activities in each of these areas. The online database, which is in addition to the members directory on the main website, was developed in 2014 (see below for details). Since 2013, APTRA has partnered with the global duty free association TFWA on the organisation of the China’s Century Conference. APTRA has also developed an annual seminar service to allow members to learn and network in suitable environments with small groups of between 50 – 100 executives.
In 2013 APTRA launched a series of APTRA Insights Seminars. The Seminars were launched through a partnerhsip with KPMG, driven by Senior Vice President Business Development, Anson Bailey. With the help of KPMG, APTRA took the Seminars to 7 cities across the region.
The objective is both to share the Association’s research with members and prospective members, introduce new ideas and research from our partners, KPMG and others, and to provide an opportunity for the industry executive attendees – from airports, retailers, airlines and inflight operators and suppliers – to meet and mingle in a relaxed setting.
In 2015 following the popularity of the seminars and strong support from members sponsoring the event, it was decided to make these an annual event. APTRA presented the seminars in 2015 to over 250 delegates in Singapore, Seoul, New Delhi and Hong Kong. The 2015 edition attracted 7 sponsoring companies:
In 2016, APTRA takes the seminars to Singapore, Mumbai, Sydney and Hong Kong. The Singapore and Mumbai seminars, which took place in May and June respectively drew a strong crowd in each venue, enabling contructive discussion and networking opportunities. APTRA has also partnered with research company m1nd-set since the launch of the seminars in 2013.
For the 2016 editions m1nd-set joint CEOs and owners David Perroud and Peter Mohn have been joined by Travel Retail Research Director Clara Perez. The 2016 programme includes presentations on the shopping behaviour and differences between Asia Pacific and non Asia Pacific travellers as well as a focus on travelling consumers behaviour with technology. m1nd-set has partnered with communications agency FILTR whose Strategy Director Charlotte Hamel, joined the line-up of speakers to discuss ways in which the industry can implement actionable strategy based on the m1nd-set technology research. The KPMG presentation focusses on “Disruptive technology in retail”.

In 2013 APTRA partnered with TFWA for the inaugural China’s Century conference which took place in Beijing in the prestigious ballroom of the Beijing Hotel next to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. 370 delegates came to the inaugural event.
The second edition took place in Shanghai at the Shangri La Hotel, attracting just under 400 delegates, with representation from across the globe and with strong representation from retailers and airport authorities. The TFWA signature One2One meeting programme was also introduced at both editions, with strong participation of over 100 companies.
The third edition will take place from 7 to 9 March in Guangzhou, at the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel in the city’s Pearl River New City district.

Database & member directory
In 2014, APTRA launched a revolutionary new tool to facilitate the connectivity between members and help drive the growth in the industry. The new member database makes it easier for members to connect with industry executives by providing a location based search function.
The database lists the relevant purchasing executive at retailers for each specific airport location where they have concessions. Members using the service can filter their search by sub-region, country, city, location (airport, downtown, cruise & ferry port…) and category. Airlines are also listed illustrating the respective inflight duty free operator and suppliers and their executives for each country or sub-region are also listed by category.
The database, which complements the member directory on the main APTRA website is a highly useful tool for all members and associate members wishing to find the relevant contacts for their purpose.
