MAY 2019, 2 MORE SUCCESSFUL APTRA EVENTS!

APTRA AIRPORT FORUM

Prior to the start of TFWA Asia Pacific, the Association hosted a successful APTRA Airport Forum at Singapore Changi on 12 May, attended by over 40 delegates from 14 airports, which included a tour of The Jewel as the guests of the Changi Airport management. Discussions included a presentation by Kansai airport on their “Shaping a customer journey”, a summary by Stephen Hillam of NPD of the ‘Understanding Young China’ research, as well as a presentation by Teo Chew Hoon of Changi Airport on regulatory pressures across the Asia Pacific.

GRANT FLEMING APPOINTED APTRA PRESIDENT

The Members of the Board of the Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association (APTRA) are pleased to announce the election of Grant Fleming, Head of Strategic Development, ASIA, Lagardère Travel Retail to the role of President with immediate effect.

The election took place following the Annual General Meeting of the Association at TFWA Asia Pacific in Singapore on Wednesday 15 May at which the new 12-strong Board was chosen.

APTRA at TFWA Asia Pacific! Come Visit Us!

In Singapore during the TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition at the Marina Bay Sands exhibition hall. TFWA sees an increase in attendance at the China Century Conference

Held in Sanya Haitang Bay, home to the world’s largest duty-free shopping complex, the 2019 TFWA China’s Century Conference drew a record 418 delegates from 200 companies. Since the first edition in 2013, the biennial event has attracted a rising proportion of Asian-based attendees, but this was the first time they accounted for over 60% of the total. Brands and suppliers were likewise well represented, while other participants included 19 airports and 25 retailers.

Opening the first day of the TFWA China’s Century Conference, TFWA President Alain Maingreaud said that while concerns have been raised about the economic growth of ‘only’ 6.6%, the China of today is growing from a much larger base, and so it is important to retain a sense of proportion. Across the rest of the region, the picture is positive for duty-free and travel retail with sales in the Asia Pacific increasing by 14.7% in the first nine months of 2018.

Next, on stage, Andrew Ford from APTRA outlined the activities of the association, including the launch of APTRA and TFWA’s Young China Travellers research. APTRA is proud to have partnered with TFWA for the China Century Conference.

Following official welcomes from the Hainan Departments of Commerce and Finance, Charles Chen from China Duty-Free Group (CDFG) revealed that Hainan’s duty-free sales topped US$ 1.5 billion last year, with CDFG’s Haitang Bay operation contributing US$ 1.1 billion. He also outlined how retailers need to maximize the use of big data and online channels to provide an attractive offer.

APTRA releases RRTP training programme video promo  


APTRA is boosting the uptake of its Responsible Retail Training Programme (RRTP) with a promotional video which encourages brands as well as retailers to enrol their frontline staff and by offering the programme in four languages. Members from the alcohol category are being sent an explanatory document and a link to a short promotional video that guides suppliers and retailers through the objectives and content of the training. Major travel retailers in the Asia Pacific region have already embraced the initiative and enrolled their staff on the programme, which is free, easy to access online and soon to be made available in Korean, Chinese and Japanese in addition to the current English version. A number of companies have committed to the programme since this enrolment drive began and APTRA expects to see a significant number of staff trained in the coming weeks and months.

Changi to host 1st APTRA Airport forum

APTRA is stepping up its service to airports in the Asia Pacific region by launching a series of Airport Forums and a dedicated online Resource Centre.

The first APTRA Airports Forum will be kindly hosted by Changi Airport Group on the afternoon of Sunday 7 May, just before the opening of the TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference.

The objective of this first meeting will be to calibrate the service offered to airports by APTRA and to start the networking and data-sharing process. Cocktails after the seminar are being sponsored by DFS and Edrington.

Future editions of the Airport Forums will be timed to coincide with existing industry events and will aim to give airport executives the chance to gain insights to current trends and regulatory issues, and to exchange ideas with their counterparts running airports across the region.

The Resource Centre will be an airport access-only section of the APTRA website that contains brand and retailer data, marketing activities, retail executions and research reports which will help landlords to benchmark and improve the way they operate travel retail in their airport. The APTRA Airports Resource Centre is due to go live later this year and, in time, APTRA intends to supplement the information available with airport-specific research reports.

All three reports on travelers from Chinese Tier 1, 2 & 3 cities have now been published on the APTRA website. The Tier 2 & 3 city reports were presented at the TFWA China’s Century Conference in Guangzhou in a session presented by m1nd-set CEO & Owner, Peter Mohn. The other reports scheduled for 2017 on Korean, Japanese and Indian shopper behaviour in duty free and travel retail will be released over the course of the year.
