Japanese financial services company Orix is planning to market Alipay to retailers popular with Chinese tourists, including department stores and duty-free shops. As Asia.Nikkei.com reports, several have already decided to adopt, according to the company, which has set an initial goal of tens of billions of yen in annual payment transactions.
Alipay, which boasts more than 450 million users, lets shoppers pay at brick-and-mortar stores with their smartphones. The cashier uses a special terminal to scan a bar code displayed on the phones’ screen. The service’s ease of use for consumers has fueled its explosive popularity in China, mainly among young people.
