One of the core missions of the industry association in Asia Pacific is, among others, “to organise programs for information exchange and research, … for the benefit of the region’s duty free and travel retail industry”. With this in mind, APTRA has forged a partnership with industry research organisation Generation to provide exclusively to APTRA members regular updates on the performance of the industry in terms of sales across all channels and all categories throughout the Asia Pacific region. The periodical reports will enable members to view the monthly progression over the previous 12 months with charts showing the percentage variations month by month. Generation is providing this proprietary data on an exclusive basis so members will only be able to access the reports through the members’ only area of the APTRA website, where all other APTRA research reports can be accessed. APTRA demonstrated its increasing prominence in Asia Pacific, playing an active part in the TFWA Asia Pacific Conference & Exhibition in May with a rousing address by then-incumbent President Sunil Tuli in the plenary conference session, as well as his participation in the TFWA Industry Associations Workshop. Talking to the conference theme “Striving for perfection”, Tuli addressed some of the imperfections in the industry and focussed on how the industry associations like APTRA and its counterparts are striving to iron out these imperfections. He publicly applauded those companies who have signed up to support the APTRA Responsible Retail Training Programme and called upon all liquor companies, which have not yet pledged their support, to step forward and do so. The stand at the exhibition, enabled APTRA’s executive team to meet with existing and potential members to talk about the association’s work. The event also provided an opportunity for APTRA to meet with colleagues from fellow regional associations ETRC and MEADFA as well as concerned industry stakeholders to discuss some of the challenges the industry is currently facing.

Ahead of the TFWA Asia Pacific Conference & Exhibition, APTRA launched a new campaign to reinforce the industry’s widespread culture of care. With the tagline ‘Care is our custom’, devised for the APTRA Responsible Retail Training Programme, the new campaign aims to highlight the support shown by APTRA for sales teams, and the support that sales teams must offer their customers. The campaign aims to impact the industry more boldly and visibly, and encourage stakeholders to adopt the core value of care in their own customer interactions. The visual, a striking stamp design, has been deployed across various media such as the association marketing material, the website, and advertising in trade publications, kindly donated by The Decision Makers, The Moodie Report and The Travel Retail Business Magazine.
